Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader by Anne Fadiman (162 pages) is a short collection of essays on books, reading and living with a family of readers. I picked this up for $1 from a book exchange recently. Some of the essays were interesting -a discussion on courtly verses carnal love of books which began with chambermaids leaving notes for the author’s brother, telling him “you don’t do that to books” (because he left it open, and face down, on the bedside cabinet before leaving the hotel for the day) is one such example. Others are just plain forgettable.

I’ve ended up sending this to my mother, after she expressed an interest in reading it.
