The Diary of Lena Mukhina: A Girl’s Life in the Siege of Leningrad (translated by Amanda Love Darragh. 393 pages, including Forward and Acknowledgements) is an exhausting read. Mukhina was a mere 16 years old when the German army approached her home city in 1941. The populace soon had to deal with all the problems of any city under siege; lack of food, power, etc. Over the course of just over a year, she kept a secret diary of what she experienced. Her family didn’t even know she’d written this. Her diary was discovered years later, and translated and published.

Exhausting, interesting, devastating read. Recommended for those who’ve read Anne Frank’s diary. Date Read: 29 May - 3 June 2016
