It looks like the garden centre job isn’t going to work out after all. John did one shift on Monday and came home full of excited chatter about it. I was really happy, he seemed to love it. Then on Tuesday the manager rang him and said that there probably wouldn’t be a full time position after all, that there might be a few shifts in the summer, but he couldn’t guarantee it.
I’m not entirely certain what happened, he’d said something about selling up and the new owners maybe closing it down (the manager is in his 70s and spends a lot of time abroad traveling on his motorbike), then he said he’d spoken to his daughter and she didn’t think they needed to take on anyone else....It’s all very vague, but at least John was let down before he’d really started properly.
These things happen and while John was a bit upset, it’s not the end of the world.
He’d considered working out his notice in the Chinese as planned, but I think his boss there, Paul, has managed to talk him out of it. At the moment, John does split shifts, 11-2 during the day, prepping for the evening, then 5-11 in the evening, cooking meals and working on the counter. They have a college kid there, meaning that during the school holidays, when our kids are home during the day, the college kid can do John’s 11-2 shift so we don’t need to worry about childcare. But this kid is going to uni in September and Paul didn’t want to take anyone else on, meaning John would have to do days in the school holidays. Obviously this isn’t ideal, which is why John had planned to leave in September. But last night, Paul said he’s keen for John to stay on and is willing to negotiate hours and a pay increase while Paul figures out what it is he wants to do (evidently he’s fed up of it himself, he’s worked in the family take away since he left school and now he’s about 45!) So I think John’s considering staying on a bit longer, at least till a better job with more sociable hours comes up!

Aww, I'm so sorry about the garden centre job :( what a shame. Hopefully something else will come up very soon xx

So annoying that they went through the whole recruitment process and got John all excited for nothing! Split shifts are far from ideal, it works out to be a very long day.

What a pity. I hope another amazing opportunity comes up soon.
