The Collector by Jon Fowles (283 pages) is one of those books that just leaves you with a creeped out feeling once you finish. The story of Frederick, a withdrawn loner who collects butterflies and is fascinated by art student Miranda. Who doesn’t know he exists.One day he wins the lottery and buys a house in the middle of nowhere. And then goes and abducts Miranda so that she can live in his basement. She tries to find a way to escape…
Told in four parts (Frederick and Miranda’s point of view, the conclusion and the aftermath), this is perhaps one of the few books that I have read that got a reaction out of me when I read the last page. Exhausting reading.
