A buzzer sounds to wake you up, and steals a dream that you thought was real.
You close your eyes and feel your face with your hand.
Again you dream, but not the same.
A different name-another game.
You’d like to stay-You know you can’t.

You leave your bed to wet your face.
First water cold, then water hot.
You see yourself as half awake.
You know you are young.
You feel so old.
And as dark turns slow to grey, it’s neither night, it’s neither day.
You’d like to stay-You know you can’t

You look away now-you look away now-
You look away from all the thoughts and things you once had dreamed you would like to do.
But, all that you can think about is what is confronting you.

You turn the light to find some clothes.
You put them on. –Put the water on the flame
And faucet drips into the drain
You clank a spoon inside a cup-A cigarette
You know you’re up, and you ask: For what?
You cannot say

Life - bleeding life that labors on with every breath and leads you reeling-blindly wheeling ever closer to your death.

You hear the judge and the jury curse.
You watch them sentence you to thirst.
And as you move from womb to breast- From nothing- To nothing less.

Go back to bed and spend the day.
Go back to sleep and hide away.

Inside a dream, through miles and miles of dreary grey

You’d like to stay.

You know you can’t.
