Day Ten: What is your favorite restaurant like? What do you eat there? What’s the decor like? in NojoMo

We don’t often eat out nowadays so I don’t have a current favourite restaurent, but there used to be one I really loved in Hereford, our nearest town. It was called The Marches and it was a wholefood restaurent. The food there was delicious, mostly vegetarian dishes like lasagne, nut roast or quiches with a huge variety of salads. I particularly loved their pasta salad made from nuts, chopped apple, grated carrots and raisins with pasta tossed in mayonaisse. I stole the recipe and used to make it for those events where everyone contributes to the food.

The decor was cottagey with wooden tables and chairs and pictures by local artists on the walls. Sometimes the proprietor would entertain us on the keyboard while we ate. It was a place where you would find interesting local events on the notice boards and run into your friends when you took the kids there for lunch on a shoppping trip. They were very child friendly and you could buy a quiche with several salads and divide it among the children. Above the restaurent was a music shop that was run by the owner’s son-in-law, so after a great lunch you could browse among the sheet music or gaze longingly at the guitars. My eldest son bought his guitar there.

All good things come to an end and after we had been going there for about 30 years the owners retired and sold the restaurent and it became a shop. The music shop above is still there, but The Marches is long gone. I really miss it.

I've been away for a few days and noticed I never answered your question. I didn't have an actual recipe I just copied the ingredients. You can use any cooled cooked pasta but it looks pretty with the fancy shapes like shells. Sliced red apple with the peel left on to add colour, hazelnuts, raisins and a small amount of grated carrot all tossed together in mayonnaise, you can add some grated cheddar cheese on top before serving. We like it with quiche but you can have it with lots of things or even on it's own for a snack.
