Yay surgery!
I love cat neuters. They make you feel like you accomplished something big and only take about 5 minutes.
My spays went well too! They were on tiny, tiny kittens (One was just over 2 pounds and the other a whopping two and a half pounds). I think I did well keeping my incisions small (an inch or less) and handling tissues gently. Tinier kitten had a full bladder (boo) so I had to work around that, which was a little tricky and then her ovary was doing something weird so I had to ligate the vasculature instead of tying it off on itself. Dr. R looked at it and said it was her anatomy being weird, not something I did, which was nice to hear. I think my intradermal closure turned out pretty well. Needed a tiny bit of tissue glue on the bigger kitten, which was my first spay of the day, but the 2nd one came together even better. Dr. R said I had good tissue handling and a good average time for my spays (about 35 minutes, which would be a good time for a newer grad). It’s nice to hear that, especially since my surgical experience is so minimal.
I also assisted on a tooth extraction. We were running behind (but not because of me!), so I didn’t complete the extraction, but I made a flap in the gums, sectioned the tooth, and got rid of some alveolar bone. Dentistry is very frustrating.
And I watched Dr. R do a neuter on a unilateral cryptorchid puppy. Pup’s testicle was stuck in his inguinal ring and had to be pulled it back into the abdomen to be removed. There’s another one tomorrow that former classmate will be doing and apparently I’m supposed to walk him through it. Ha! My advice is to reflect the penis but don’t cut it off, tie off the caudal superficial epigastric vessel, and don’t fuck up the ureters. That’s about all I got.
