yesterday i visited my friend kristie, who gave birth last monday to a baby girl, penelope. so sweet! the baby was very quiet, mainly slept (duh shes a newborn!) and only cried a little when she needed her diaper changed. when she was awake, she was very alert and looked around. i got to hold her for awhile. it was great!
kristie told me all about her birth and how everything went. she had pitocen (sp?) to speed up her delivery and an epidural during labor. i didnt realize they have to ease off the meds before you push in order for you to feel how much youre pushing…so kristie ended up feeling everything anyway. she also had an episiodemy (sp?) and was nursing some stitches. she and penelope also had a fever when penelope was born. kristie has a small infection in her breast from her milk duct getting clogged. i think this is why the baby had a fever too. she spent 2 days in the NICU, but is now healthy and doing great. kristie gave me a lot of insight about giving birth and what to expect during and afterwards. it was helpful. im glad shes doing ok and dilinger got 3 weeks off of work to help out while she recovers from the stitches and the infection.
im not gonna say im still not terrified about giving birth, but i feel better about it. she helped eased my worries a little bit and let me realize that no matter what happens during, it will all turn out ok. i will be able to do this. i will heal. it will be alright. and its ok to be scared and nervous and cry about it. kristie said at some point she was telling her mom she couldnt do it, she couldnt push the baby out and she was scared, but she got through out and has a healthy baby. its going to suck…but it will be worth it once he’s here. she also let me know about the afterbirth and having to push out the placenta. she said as soon as that was out, she felt complete relief. you can tell in her pictures. so…it will be ok!
alright i gotta get moving. been up for about 2 hours and have only had breakfast. my piano student cancelled, so i have the day to myself (until4 when i have a lesson with my student in my building). need to be domestic and do some cleaning and cut up some fruit. later!
