i have 2 days left of instruction for the end of the year! im not done with school, but at least i dont have to teach :)

school here in NYC ends on 6/26. the organization i work for is a not-for-profit that helps implement music programs in inner city, underfunded schools. so, i always end a little earlier than the rest of the staff. this is nice, because the last two weeks of school i am busy with instrument returns and graduation rehearsals/ceremonies to really be teaching anyway.

im loosing my voice today because of allergies and second graders. this one second grade class…i dont know why they are so loud and rude and dont follow directions. they dont follow any adult instruction in the entire building. i had kids wrestling and playing tag in the classroom today when i was trying to line them up for dismissal. i was shouting at the top of my lungs and the pollup in my throat was not happy, so now i can barely talk. definitely need to have some tea before bed. wish it wasnt so darn hot…but yeah. second graders are awful. i dont know how they have so much energy. honestly…second graders have the most energy in the entire school! they are constantly bouncing off the walls and talking and moving, its hard to keep up. you would think prek would be like this, but they are calm little angles. sigh what can you do!

today was also the last day of orchestra. most of the students didnt show up. unfortunately, for them, i handed out awards and prizes today. we had a great time! i had one of those “cant wait until next year” moments, just for a second lol. after school rehearsals are difficult…dont know if i can get them changed next year. we’ll see! at least my small group who is performing for the graduation ceremonies is doing well and they are ready to go for next week!

still have not heard from my principal if im hired in the fall or not. im going to try to stop into her office tomorrow afternoon, either during lunch or my prep, to ask her. shes pretty much been avoiding me. she stopped in my room on monday, when i was beginning to put my makeup on for the gala (ill explain in a minute), so i was a little embarrassed to ask her then. she just randomly popped in while i was getting ready for a performance. hopefully, i will have an answer by the end of the week. i gotta tell her about this baby soon too because i am starting to pop!

so, what is this gala i speak of?

monday night, my organization had their annual children’s benefit gala to raise money for the organization. i performed with 3 of my students, about 80 other student instrumentalists and teachers, as well as a student choir of 70 3rd and 4th graders downtown. it was amazing! such a wonderful event. if you are on facebook, check out Education Through Music and like our page! you can see pictures from the gala and from the festival last week, as well as some videos i think. my kids had a great time and it was a wonderful experience. im not sure how much money we raised, but i know it was $1,000 a person to come for dinner. it looked delicious too! we only got a small portion of whatever they ate upstairs and it was amazing!

alright, i gotta get going. gotta feed this baby. oh! my piano student in my building is a total rockstar. we could have kept playing together for hours today. love this kid! he wants to play all kinds of instruments. making more and more musicians every day!
