Two blocks down, 25 more to go! I have my first in-house rotation starting tomorrow. Radiology. My anxiety has kind of escalated. Mostly because I’ll have to be interacting with all my classmates who I don’t know. Plus, I don’t know where stuff in the hospital is. And I feel like I don’t know anything, even though I know a lot of it has to be lurking somewhere in my brain. It’s all just kind of scary. If I could just do externships for my whole clinical year, I’d be so happy. I’m sick of having to fight off panic attacks. Stupid social anxiety. I imagine things will get better once I’m actually there and working with people and such, but right now I just want to hide.
I had a really good jugular blood draw on my last day at externship #2, which was cool. I did a dental on a small dog. Learned that restraining a large snake for a blood draw is remarkably difficult. Performed my first euthanasia on a companion animal - the clinic does exams and services for a lot of local rescue groups and, sadly, this dog had a lot of behavior issues, especially related to aggression, so would not have been safe to adopt out. He was premedicated, so more or less asleep when I administered the euthanasia solution. It went in smoothly, but the vessel blew, so I don’t think the full dose went in to circulation. He was taking a while to pass, which may have been due to the vessel blowing and him not getting the full dose or because he was young and healthy, so the doctor gave him a bit more. It was sad, but somehow easier because, even though his foster cared about him, he wasn’t someone’s beloved pet. It was a good experience to have the opportunity of euthanizing a dog for the first time without the huge level of emotions that typically comes with it.
I had a day of being social on Saturday. It was fun but kind of wore me out. I met up with Sarah and Lauren in the morning. We did a little shopping and then went back to Lauren’s place. She’s moving to CT to do an internship in emergency medicine for the next year. Sarah’s still job searching, which sounds a bit terrifying. Ahhh, adult jobs! We’re taking a table and chairs, small desk, and elliptical machine off Lauren and her husband’s hands for free. No idea where they’ll go, but it’s really hard to turn down nice, free stuff :P
Then, that evening, Kat and Genevieve came by for a cookout. Kat brought Idzi, her mom’s dog, to meet Harvey. They were both good, but not as interested in one another as we had hoped they would be. We grilled corn, hot dogs, brats, and had smores. Mmm…
Today’s plan is to maybe review some radiology stuff, get stuff ready for tomorrow and try not to panic too much. Whee. I kind of just wish I could take a relaxing vacation instead :P
