I start my clinical year tomorrow! I seriously cannot believe it’s time. 54 more weeks of vet school!
So, last night I had an on-call shift at for large animal clerk duty that I COMPLETELY forgot about. I was curled up in bed all cozy and dozing off to sleep when the home phone rang. Someone left a message and I ignored it, thinking it was one of my relatives on my dad’s side who have no concept of appropriate times to call. Aaron though he should listen to it and, as he played it, I heard the words “clerk duty.” Well, shit. I didn’t have anything ready so we ended up digging through dirty laundry looking for my clerk duty outfit (not stinky! WIN!), tossed stuff together, and off we went. I was there from 1:30 until 5:30. I am so not a night person, especially when it comes to braining. I got there and there was an emergency case. I basically handed the doctor stuff that she needed for placing an IV catheter in the patient. Then, they moved from the equine center to the large animal hospital due to a suspected infectious disease, so everyone but me went over there and I was in the giant, dark, Equine Center all by my lonesome. A little creepy. I had to do the hourly treatments for the patients there and, most of it was OK, just checking water levels, making sure they were still alive, etc, but then there was a case that needed some stuff done and, as a small animal person who’s not a horse expert, I was not going into a stall alone with a horse I was unfamiliar with. Thankfully, they could spare the senior student, so she came to help me out. I was happy to hold the horse’s lead and get slobbered on while she did the real work :P
So, got home about 6am and fell asleep, had to sleep until 2:30ish (I start my first externship tomorrow, so I didn’t want to be completely low on sleep and get sick, etc. Though my sleep schedule is probably extra screwed up now. Whee), so my day’s shot. Boo. I had plans to go to brunch with some friends and am a bit bummed that fell through, but what can you do?
Trying to figure out what I need for my externship tomorrow. They said to dress business casual and bring my name tag and stethoscope. I’m really hoping it’s more of a shadowing type of experience, at least for the first day or so. I do not feel prepared. I figure, I’ll complete a good list of history questions, dig out my Nerdbook (a good quick reference pocket book for all things veterinary. I really need to familiarize myself with it as it’s a great resource), maybe take a peak at some clinical pathology stuff....I mean I probably should have been studying stuff this semester in preparation, but no one else I know has been so it’s not like I’ve been slacking more than anyone else. Ehh. Just going to try to take it easy today and not freak out too much. I can do this.
Got other stuff to write about but I have the screwed-up-sleep-schedule-groggies so I’m going to have a snack, ponder my wardrobe and shoe options for tomorrow, and maybe curl up and watch some TV.
