I got back from Fiji on Monday and back to work on Tuesday. I enjoyed the holiday but I really think I am more of an urban dweller, 5 nights on a tropical island was just a little bit long for me. Yeah I know – first world problem right? Part of it was being with my friend Terri for such a long stretch. She is a tightly wound spring and in the absence of her normal family drama (she has two teenage boys), she kind of searches for other stuff to stress about. She also ends every statement with a “is that alright?” which I am a bit ashamed to admit I snapped at by about day 3. We were celebrating our 50th birthdays - there really isn’t any need for her to say “I’m going to take a shower, is that okay?”.
All in all though we did have a good time. The weather was beautiful, I didn’t get sunburnt, and we drank cocktails and had a few laughs. We did agree next time we travel it will be back to our usual weekend shopping trips to Australia though.
So now I am back at my desk and feeling slightly less thrilled with the world. It’s been really cold here and that is even more demotivating. The office is it’s usual deadly quiet self. I’m busy, stuff is coming in via email – but when I answered a phone call a few minutes ago I noticed my throat felt sore – that kind of dry feeling you get when you have talked to anyone for hours. Much as I hated stuff about my old job, it was in a busy office, we had music playing, clients coming by and a team of staff that cared about each others lives (and discussed them at length).
Still soon it will be the weekend. I have a widows dinner on Saturday night, I have to take a vegetable dish. Then Sunday I am going to yum cha and a matinee performance of a musical version of “Singing in the Rain”. I also need to pull some winter clothing out of storage. Ugh.
Before I go, I just wanted to mention a wonderful moment out on the island. The Fijian people are lovely. They are a joyous bunch who seem to genuinely enjoy what they do. When the boat arrives they welcome new arrivals by singing traditional songs, they farewell people the same way. We sat with them as we waited for our boat to arrive. The guy said “this song is for you blondie” and then started to play “I’m leaving on a jetplane”. We had quite the duet going. Fun.

Someone constantly asking me "is that alright" would have annoying to me, too. I keep forgetting that y'all are heading into winter as we head into summer. After six months of cold, snow, ice and COLD (like frigid...remember I'm in Minnesota) it's nice to have the sunshine back and it mean it's warm out...not freezing.
Fiji sounds amazing. I've never been anywhere tropical. Thought about Belize - too expensive. I'd need to take out a loan to go there for a couple days. Oh well...maybe someday.
Hope you aren't getting sickly...and if you are...get better right quick!!
