I woke up Monday morning to the news that a judge had overturned the ban in Nebraska against same-sex marriages. While I know many were happy and celebrating this great news, I was less happy. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for same-sex marriages. But I have lived in Nebraska for over 25 years now, and I know how the majority think. Same-sex marriages are a sin in the eyes of God and that while, sure, lesbian and gay couples deserve the same respect and abilities as heterosexual couples, they just shouldn’t do it as husband and husband or wife and wife.
So I wasn’t surprised when just hours later, there had already been issued an order to rethink this decision and to halt the allowance of same-sex marriages. They’re to be allowed as of March 09 of this year. But what does surprise and, well, disgust me, is the comments of many on local news sites like wowt.com. Popular opinion seems to be that if we allow same-sex marriages now, that all too soon we will have to allow people to marry their selves or to marry their pets. Really? Gay and lesbian couples will (if this decision is stayed) no longer have to go to Iowa to be married and THAT is what first comes to mind? What about the state motto of Equality before the law. THAT is my first thought. We have this motto all about equality, yet so many people here are just so close-minded and glued to the words of the Bible that they condemn such allowance of equality.
Quite honestly, while I love where I live; love the low crime rate, the friendly people, the frequently changing weather, and small-town feel of life, I genuinely hate the popular opinion that homosexuality is something to be hidden behind closed doors, instead of embraced by all. Homosexuality has always existed in some sense in this world. It likely always will exist. Time to realize that and at least come to tolerate this type of love, instead of be repulsed by it.
