The Crimson Ribbon by Katherine Clements (355 pages, including Acknowledgements, Author’s Note and Bonus Material) tells the story of Ruth Flowers. The year is 1646, and May Day brings in tragedy for Ruth when she witnesses her mother’s hanging. Ruth is forced to flee her master’s house and head to London, where she meets Elizabeth Poole. Ruth finds herself struggling to escape her past while the Civil War rages on…

I was looking forward to reading this, as I’ve not read much on the English Civil War (fiction or non-fiction). Having said that, the ending appeared too perfect - too “happy”. Whilst it was a quick read, there didn’t seem to be much depth to the story or characters. Despite it including witchcraft, illicit love, religion, and war. I wish I could have gotten more involved in the story, but it wasn’t to be. It could have been so much more interesting.

Books read: 6/52
