don't tell it in rhyme in Words that Rhyme

everyone knows
they say all the time
to be taken serious
don’t tell it rhyme

as soon as they hear it
or see it right here
it’s all just tomfoolery
for that we are clear

sure there is Dickenson
Longfellow and Poe
those folks were all crazy
and that we all know

stories of love
or heartbreak and woe
is something of nothing
words rhyming for show

most famous of all
are written by Seuss
about green rotting food
then there’s old mother goose

so take it from someone
who would never try rhyme
because I haven’t the talent
the insight or time

From the back of the class I frantically wave my hand, "Oh, ohohoh Miss Inksky, please make up a poem that features zombies and creepy clowns"!

:) Lots of good comments. It has always seemed funny to me, at least in America (can't speak for other places) that people so quickly equate rhyming verse to either Suess or Mother Goose, of Silverstein, or Pop Music. Rhyming, by its very nature, can make the expression of an idea more difficult; so it should be treated with more (not less) respect.

I love rhyme, I rarely write poetry but sometimes rhyme seeps into my writing uninvited :)

A lot of people over-simplify their words in order to ensure a rhyme, I really appreciate good rhyming poetry because balancing the literary device without losing the essence of the message is a real skill. You have that skill.. and I especially like the final verse :p
