Currently Playing: “Gold” - Black Map

I've been thinking a lot of my old band. It happens from time to time and it's usually triggered by listening to new music that really connects and resonates with me.
"That would have been an awesome song to cover," or "I think Mayra could have sang this melody in a really interesting way." It's always bitter sweet. I miss the guys. I miss her. I think that was part of intense joy I got out of playing shows with them. We all just had this real great chemistry before things got weird and rocky near the end. I wish I could have made it work.
I've also kicked around the idea of starting or joining a band now that I'm out here in Austin, the so-called "Music Capital of the World" but it all seems so daunting. It would take so much work and I've already got so much of that in my life. There's so many musicians here - what are the chances that we'd make anything worthwhile? Who knows, maybe sometime in the near future we'll all be at a spot in our lives when we can collaborate long distance and create something new. Or at least reunite to play the occasional show. That would be nice. Maybe somehow, in the strangeness and intricacies of the internet my old bandmates will stumble onto this and feel the same.

I picked up my bass up the other day and played it for close to an hour thanks to this wonderful band I just discovered called "Black Map". After figuring our their tuning I started learning some of the music on their album that stuck out to me and nailed about 3 of my favorite songs. It was nice to feel that groove of something clicking, even if it was just me learning someone else's music. The pads of my fingers hurt like motherfuckers, though, and reminded me that those calluses I'd worked so hard to establish have softened up. Hammering away on a keyboard all day, every day will do that to you, I guess.

I'm looking forward to being done with work today. Thursdays are usually pretty hard cardio/conditioning and technique at the gym. I'm looking forward to pushing myself, tightening up some new techniques/combination we've been working and earning my Friday.

I think that's it for now.
