There is nothing as playful as washing on a line, on a breezy, sunny day.
The fabrics swing up as high as an energy filled, adrenalin seeking, boundary pushing 7 year old who has perfected the momentum.
They linger at the top, the beige bath mat fluttering as proudly as a community flag.
Underneath, the shadows dance to the same patterns but with a completely different expression of the song. Lines, rectangles and parellelograms move like a kaleidoscope.
Then the washing floats down, and the dancing pauses. All is momentarily still as the wind takes another breath.
I could sit and watch it for ages. Large light fabrics like sheets and towels are the most entertaining to watch, but in a good breeze everything takes flight!
I attempted to capture the playful energy in a watercolour painting recently, but I’m still learning and made many mistakes with the shadows, the movement and the colour mixes. It’s a subject I can have a lot of fun with though so I know I will want to try and try again until I get it right!
