The other night I walked along The Battery at sunset and then ventured down a few of my favorite streets in the historic district of Charleston, taking photos right at dusk. This is a favorite time if day for me to be out taking pictures.

The weather was just cool enough to feel like it was still Spring, although June will be upon us soon. How enchanting are the secret gardens, porches, columns, tropical plants. statuary and walkways of this mysterious and beautiful old city by the sea.

I was enraptured by the loveliness of the early evening light illuminating flowers along picket fences as I lingered by the gates of gardens and yards filled with every kind of plant and vine. The city seems to luxuriate in its greenery and quietly reveals a hidden garden at every step and turn along the way.

Spring in May has reached maturity, and is in the final phase before summer. The azaleas have long since bid us farewell.

These early evening walks are always conducive to a contemplative, often wistful mood. I can look up and always see a few stars. The other night a crescent moon greeted me, forming the backdrop for the endless reaches of space beyond this little blue orb that sustains us.

As I walked along, carefully watching my step as it was getting dark, I held on more tightly to the lingering vestiges of the month of May.

Things seemed right with the world momentarily. I felt a sense of normalcy. This Spring has offered so many delights to the senses, a seemingly endless pageantry of color, sounds and scents.

The smack-down heat of summer is just days away. I have been taking advantage of every chance I can to be outdoors in this, Nature’s season of perfection. Fall has its glories, but in Spring all of creation is alive and hopeful. We need the feeling of Spring in our hearts more than ever. I only wish it would last.
