šŸŖ…Eat, drink and be merry, Ā”gringo-amigos! in oh, Mexico; it sounds so simple

Ā”Feliz Cinco de Mayo! if you celebrate. This may surprise you, but it’s not much of a holiday here in Mexico. Believe it or not, Taco Tuesday isn’t a big deal here, either. Today is just Tuesday… or martes, actually.

So, then, Happy Tuesday! and ”feliz martes! Every day really is a reason to celebrate. (Not capitalizing days of the week still seems weird to me, though.)

I’m a curious sort and was compelled to search: how did cinco de mayo become popular in the US. And, while ā€œa celebration of Mexican culture and heritageā€ was mentioned, so was ā€œmass marketing campaigns by beer, wine, and tequila companies,ā€ and that seems the more plausible answer to me. U.S. businesses excel at commercializing holidays and promoting unhealthy activities, imho, and Cinco de Mayo covers both in one fell swoop. The U.S. promotion may have begun with an appreciation for Latino culture, but it sure feels like appropriation now to me.

But, I really don’t mean to be a party-pooper, and Mexico is more than happy, I’m sure, to share its fabulous avocados and tequila with partiers north of the border. Believe it or not, to meet the U.S. market’s demand for Cinco de Mayo 2025 – that’s one day, folks – Mexico exported more than 96,000 tons of avocados. And, to put that in perspective, you could make about four batches of this GRANDE-sized guacamole with that many avocados…

That photo was taken when the municipality of TancĆtaro in the Mexican state of MichoacĆ”n earned a Guinness World Record for Largest Guacamole at their 2026 Guacamole Festival in April. Mexico is a bit obsessed with Guinness World Records, and it’s quite likely another, larger batch of guacamole will displace this winner in the future, probably at a different MichoacĆ”n municipality’s Guacamole Festival. There seems to be a bit of friendly competition going on in that state, where a lot, A LOT of avocados are grown.

I consume my avocados on toast mostly, and recently I’ve been kicking that up a notch with an initial spread of the pineapple-jalapeno jam that I shared in an earlier post. It’s quite yummy! If I celebrate Cinco de Mayo this year, it’ll be with this Hot Honey Margarita, although methinks that name might be better suited to a Valentine’s Day celebratory cocktail. šŸ’ƒ
