Like butter in Book Two

Wow. It’s been since February 19 that I have written here. I’ve been gone before. I always come back. I don’t know if I am back yet or not. Time will tell.

I most like to write here just so that I can read the sidebar of what I have written here on past years on this day. Now that I have been coming here since 2019 there is always a surprise or two. Easter eggs. A blooper reel. An extra bonus. Prize inside.

But today I don’t write for my future self. I write to my readers, those who leave the occasional note. Friends from afar - the third reason I write here. (The second reason I write here is because writing clarifies the mind, like butter. I always feel so much lighter after I write.)

So, I’m still in Taiwan. I’ve been here since December 1 and I am leaving on May 14. I haven’t been here in May since the year 2000, the year I left and claimed never to return. Never say never. The missus will be picking me up in Vancouver where we will be spending a couple of days looking at real estate. I left the truck in Kelowna last autumn. I am looking forward to driving. I am also looking forward to pizza, salad, cooler weather, changeable weather, seeing the girls, my sisters, mom and the cat. I am looking forward to sipping white wine and barbecuing. I am looking forward to cooking. Those are the only things I miss about living in Canada.

My American hiking buddies both left Kaohsiung, Joe for a month or more - he and Christine are getting their eyes operated on for glaucoma. Mark left at the end of April. He had a rental near Monkey Mountain. The missus left Taiwan at the end of March. So, I’m really on my own for the next 10 days.

I decided that I am going to visit all my favourite places. I am going to take my cameras and record video and once I get back to Canada, I can edit and make a few videos. How many I make will determine the publishing schedule but at least one a month for the months that I am away from Taiwan. I might come back as early as the middle of September and I may stay in Canada for the Christmas holidays. I said that last year too but as soon as the weather turned cold I changed my mind.

In terms of writing, I’ve been spending my time writing on Slowly. I have 15 penpals now (but maybe only 5 are very active.) I treat writing there much like I write here, a self obsessed diary of thoughts both mundane and deep (mostly mundane.) but it is a fun platform because I learn a lot about things I never would have thought about and it is fun to bounce ideas off strangers as our relationships develop.
