tuesday night i went to my dad’s. that was the night before the day before christmas. or the night before christmas eve.
so i got everything together and headed over. something wasn’t sitting right. one of those feelings. i got there and go to open the door. locked. checked for the key and alas, crap. forgot my keys. i keep them on a separate keyring since i don’t use them very often and don’t like to clutter my keyring. holy crap moment.
didn’t want to make my dad since he had been asleep for a while as i got there about midnight. so i attempted to break into his house. hopped the side fence to get to where the trash cans are hoping that he left some back door unlocked. first gate was easy and got into the backyard. sliding glass door was locked so i went around the side but alas, no luck. went back to where i came from but of course the gate i got over initially was locked. there’s a latch, but i didn’t realize there was lock on it too. my dad, of course, would have put on in when he bought the place if there wasn’t one there already. so this means i had to figure out how to get out. there were some buckets and i stepped on them because they were tall enough so i could jump back over the fence.
however, when i stepped on the bucket, the lid broke. luckily, he had some soil in it about 3/4 full. so after an oh crap moment where i thought i woke him, i stepped into the bucket, on top of the soil, and jumped out. glad i didn’t injure myself since the ground was like 7 or so feet below.
was freezing cold since i only had on some track shorts and a tshirt since i figured i’d be in the car and then the house.
pondered what to do while sitting in the car. pondered going to a hotel, but they were expensive and it was already 12:30 or so by then. tried to sleep in the car, but it was cold and wasn’t comfortable. turned the car on for a little bit to heat it up since it was still cold. then put on a long sleeve shirt. the process of looking up hotels, trying to sleep, and heating the car went in cycles for about two hours. luckily my laptop was with me and i was able to connect to his wireless to browse youtube for a while as well.
had a stroke of genius about 2 am. remembered there was another key locked away. there is a four digit code i needed. i only remembered one four digit code and it was the right one. looked around for the key and didn’t find it at first. had another crap moment where i thought he moved it. luckily i found it and was able to get in the house about 2:30.
glad my dad didn’t come out the next morning and find me asleep in my car. he would have been annoyed at me for not waking him up. so it was good i got into the house for that reason, and the fact i didn’t really want to freeze.
we shall see if he mentions the broken lid to the bucket…
on a random note, writing this entry reminds me of an article i read recently. it was about how you can tell what generation people are from based on the amount of spaces they leave after periods. i feel like i’m probably one of the last group of two spacers.
originally on typewriters, all characters took the same amount of room so people would double space after periods so it was clear when they were starting a new sentence. nowadays, computer fonts (and probably typewriters as well) space characters differently so they do not all take up the same amount of space.
newer generations are now taught to only use one space after a period. i remember some mentions of this in college, but never thought about it. while i sometimes single space, i tend to double space. but now when typing informally, i use punctuation, but not capitals, if you have noticed.
so double spacer here.
are you a single or double spacer?
