gingerbread-house

After spying a sweet kit at Costco I called my sister and asked little nibling #1 to see if she’d like to build a gingerbread house with me. A funny part of me kind of wanted to send her this....

ha-ha

… but seriously. She’s only (just) four. She needs at least a few more years until she gets my sense of humour:)

She spent the morning going to visit Santa and when I got there she still had her pretty little dress on. I asked her what she wanted for Christmas and she said she asked to marry Santa Claus. She let out a big, disappointing sigh and said… “…buuuuut he’s ALREADY married to Mr. Claus” complete with a little pouty frown. Ooooh boy. This kid I tell ya. She’s a keeper.

I had a bit of setting up to do with the house first, getting the frame up and such. She watched me for a bit. Kept wanting to ‘test’ a ‘cookie’ part of the gingerbread. I had her brother on my lap and I swear I only looked away for a half a second and he had already nibbled off a piece of the train car. Oh well, at least it wasn’t part of the house.

So I got the house part set up but then realized one side of the roof was beginning to slide off so I tried to nudge it back up. And that’s when it happened. Unplanned demolition. First the one side started to bend it and then the other and the next thing you know, my house was flat again. I hollered for her dad to come help me hoist the walls back up. Four hands was definitely easier than two. I guess I was a bit stingy on the icing the first go-round but only because I wanted to be sure to have enough left over for her to decorate to her hearts content. There was no worries there, there ended up being plenty. And that includes all the (multiple) times she put out her finger and asked to ‘test’ the icing. First the white and then the red, because she “wanted to see” if they tasted the same:) Then the same with the green. Then all over again because she wasn’t quite sure.

When the house was finally hoisted she had a ton of fun decorating it. We fell into a rhythm of me putting on a dab of icing where she pointed and then she’d stick a candy on. The kit came with a train and two train cars and a Santa but we just used the one little train car and decorated the the other pieces of train with icing and candies for desert after dinner. Note to self: next year bring cookies to munch on while building so the kids don’t eat the house.

I think it turned out pretty swell. It’s now sitting in their living room till whenever they decide to dig in. I think we might make this a yearly thing. I’m totally in:)

In other news, after everything was said and done and we were sitting in the living room, I went to change the baby and my sister mentioned he’s just found his weiner. Yup. Yup, he did. He couldn’t stop playing with it. He’s one and a half now so that was pretty darn fast. I suppose this is the beginning of a very long life long fascination.

:)
