and then there was Sunday night:
Name: Evan
Age: 46 (yesterday was his birthday!!)
Occupation: Writer, Dreamer, Philosopher, Ad Agency Owner
We met: For dinner/drinks at this really fun Mexican place (Okay, my profile on the internet personal site said that I love Mexican food. Thats why there are so many references to Mexican places. Yum.). He was standing outside the place waiting for me when I arrived. Something about our initial contact was really pleasant, but I cant put my finger on it. Maybe it was just because he was standing there and recognized me from across the street as I walked up and he was waving. I dont know. I found it sweet.
We did: Well what do you know? We ate!! And talked a lot. And I had a total of two beers! Hooray.
Convo: Fascinating. He is most definitely a talker. He did ask quite a few questions that seemed like feelers. Almost like trick questions. Im not sure if I passed the test, but he really opened up to me and went off in a million different directions. He is such an abstract thinker and kind of veered off into outer space a couple of times. I had to work to keep up with him. But it was funny, every time I would offer a tidbit of input, he would grab it and run with it. We went from talk about movies and screenwriting, travel and architecture, appreciation of our surroundings and life after 9-11 to feminism and the disconnect with the development of western civilization and then on to the closing of the gap between eastern and western philosophies because of technology .on and on. By the end of two hours, my head was spinning!! Even more strange, at one point I actually had some kind of déjà vu experience. Like wed met before and had part of the same conversation. Ooooh. Eerie.
Part of personality I liked: He is never at a loss for something to say.
Part of personality I disliked: He is never at a loss for something to say!
Part of appearance I liked: Better looking than the black and white photo he sent me upon our initial e-mails. Very attractive. MUCH younger looking than he actually is. I had to go back and look at his profile to realize that hes frickin OLD people!! I honestly didnt pay too much attention to his age because he looks so young in his photo. Damn! Damn, hes OLD! Okay, Ill shut up now. Plus, I kinda like that. This older thing is so new to me. Im so used to young, studly whippersnappers who dont have a clue
Part of appearance I disliked: Well, he has to color his hair. Theres no way he could be 46 and not have a single gray hair! I seriously cant think of anything else (not that the hair color thing is really an issue). Yes, hes tall enough: 62.
Highest Point: When Id discovered that hed actually studied my profile and learned some things about me. The biggest surprise came when he told me that hed looked up stuff about Scorpios because hed never dated one (Im a Scorp, thru and thru), and he told me, from what hed seen, that I seem to fit the profile. And that there was definitely an air of mystery about me. And thats how I realized that his birthday was yesterday. I had to ask him! Because (shame on me!) I didnt even notice the birthday and his sign and how old he was until after the friggin date!!
Put it this way, the high point was finding out that he is extremely thoughtful.
Lowest Point: Reinforcing the fact that Im not so knowledgeable in the art and artist arena. Nor do I have a solid background in reading heavy-hitting as well as obscure authors. Or even classic films. Im not nearly as cultured as Id like to be. I cant discuss these things with the greatest of ease. I kinda faked my way through some of it.
How it ended: Honestly, I wanted to stay longer. Even more honestly, I craved just one more beer. I guess it was good that he asked for the check. I didnt need to stay longer, and I certainly didnt need another beer. Plus, he was fighting off a sniffly nose and a cold. When the check arrived, I grabbed it and asked him to let me pay as a birthday gesture. He let me, but offered to get the tip. I refused.
He walked me to my car, and we lingered for a little while. He already has my mobile number, but also asked for my home number. He told me that he enjoyed meeting me, and I confessed the déjà vu experience to him. Im not sure why. Then as I was turning to go, I turned back and opened my arms and we had a brief hug. I very rarely initiate hugs. The whole thing was strange. Very nice, but strange.
Chances I’ll see him again: Well, assuming I passed his test and he wants to see me again, Id say very high. Im simply fascinated by the man.
