Forcing the Issue in Open Diary 2001-2018 (Pre-Prosebox)

So it was just a few short weeks ago when I decided to put the house hunting ideas on the back burner because I just wasn’t quite ready to make all those decisions and didn’t feel like I had enough savings to spare. I decided to sign another year lease (beginning November 1st). The property managers told me that they’d just write up a new lease and slip it under my door and I could fax it or mail it back in. The lease never came, but I wasn’t worried, I’d just slip a reminder note in the envelope along with my November rent.

Wouldn’tchaknow, there was a notice put on everyone’s door on Sunday afternoon (November 1st) stating that our building had been bought by some developers in Costa Mesa. Looks like my building is going condo. Wow.

So I just talked to one of the new owners. She was actually really cool. Her company is working on another project in town right now, and she told me she didn’t know exactly when the condo process was going to start, but I told her that I might be interested in possibly buying my unit or the one next door. Next door actually has a better view and a better kitchen and hardwoods throughout, whereas my unit has carpeting in the two bedrooms because of damage to the floors and a shithole of a teeny, tiny galley kitchen (as if I ever use it anyway).

She told me she was glad to hear that I was interested in buying, and that I would have first option to buy since I am currently living there. I just hope the price is reasonable. She actually asked me what kind of price range I was looking for, but I told her that we’d have to discuss it. I mean, the building is old and stately (c. 1928), it’s in a historic district, designed by a female architect (not many in that era), the convenience to shopping and nightlife is ideal, the views are beautiful, and I’m on the top floor. I’m sure they’ll consider all of that and then some when coming up with a price.

But there are a lot of negatives and roadblocks when considering trying to sell the units to people who don’t already live here: no adjacent parking (except street…I pay extra to park in a parking garage that doesn’t even have reserved spaces), the wiring is really screwed up and a fire hazard (I’m sure), they would need to install a CH/A system, the elevator breaks down at least once a week, all the kitchens and bathrooms would need to be remodeled, there are no W/D hookups, oh the list goes on…

Lots of work, but I think this place has lots and lots of potential. If the price was right, I think it would be so amazingly cool to buy both units (mine and my next-door neighbor’s) and tear down the wall in between and make a penthouse suite!! Yeah baby!

Okay. Settle down.

I’m sure I’ll write lots more about it soon. In the meantime, I suppose I need to get a move-on with regards to getting a pre-approval. Oy. Lots to think about. My head’s hurting.

More later: a meeting with someone very special (who writes here in OD), MM’s latest e-mail, my waning interest in Speed Dater #2, Speed Dater #3’s mysterious disappearance, work woes that I’m sure are right around the corner, the Thanksgiving preparations, my big ass, digging through “the box”, lining up some Super T action for my Christmas vacation, oh the list goes on…
