Nov. 6: Decorating (Thinking) Out Loud in Open Diary 2001-2018 (Pre-Prosebox)

What I think I want to do to my place (of course, subject to change on a whim!):

  • Dining Table: Found an antique place in a little town nearby. I’d found a trestle table there a few months ago, and when I went back it was gone. It had just been sold a day earlier. Talked to the owner of the antique store who told me that he could get me one easily. Supposedly, he gets them all the time. What kind of chairs do I want to go with it? I dream of setting a gorgeous table with an amazing centerpiece. Lots of fabric and luscious color. I dream a lot.
  • Bedroom: Found a duvet cover, shams and other bedding at West Elm that I like a lot. Would be nice to put a rug in there as well. Might also be nice to have a bench at the end of the bed. I can then move the dressing table to the sidewall by the windows. I’d also like to separate the space between the bedroom and the living room with glass doors hung from the ceiling. There’s already a built-in bookcase that divides the two spaces, but it is only about four and ½ feet high. I like the window idea because it would divide the space while allowing the light from the windows to flow through. I’d found some doors (really, like cupboard doors) at another antique store. Don’t know if they’re still there. Going to have to see.
  • Master Bath: Though it’s already finished, I’d love to create a spa bath with wood and neutral colorations. I want a very tranquil space, and I think things like a wooden bathmat to go on the concrete floor might be nice, along with super-oversized bath towels, a really full, crisp shower curtain (perhaps three or four—I have double shower rods and I love draping layers of fabric). And cool black and white photos framed on the walls.
  • Second Bedroom: This space would actually be a great sitting space because it’s very open and you practically walk into it as you walk down the front hallway. After EXMS and I broke up and he took his STUNNING antique bed, my parents brought back my old daybed. This is perfect for having guests over (ahem). I’d like to put a beautiful duvet on it and simply COVER the whole thing with scrumptious pillows. I want to make it really, really colorful…perhaps Indian-like or a mix of cultural influences. And maybe even a canopy of some sort? Because that could really enclose that space! Then I’d need a rug…maybe a couple layers of rugs…I’d love for this space to be a textural and colorful treat!
  • The Looooooong Entry Hallway: The entrance to the loft is this really long hallway. At first I thought I’d hate it because there’s nothing I can really do with the space. But now I actually like it because it seems to build anticipation before you actually walk inside the loft. Already have these great letterpress prints that are framed and lining the hallway. There are nine of them, I think. That’s just one side of the wall. The other side is currently blank. I’d like to put some small shelves on the other side that could hold just some small artifacts and tea lights or something so that when people come over it could have a nice, warm glow. I dno’t know. We’ll see what happens with that. I just remembered that I have a bunch of little shelves in storage that I could use for this little project!
  • Second Bath: Since I want to re-do the master bath, I’m thinking the second bath could actually be touched up with the stuff from the master. I like that motif better than what’s in there right now. The master stuff is kind of a cool blue/green sort of organic and glass kind of feel while the current bath is a red/black motif that feels old and incomplete to me. Some of the 2nd bath stuff could move to the “spa” bathroom and it would be just fine.
  • Living Space: I already have a leather sofa and big chair that are kind of spice-colored. This is where I’ve decided to do neutral and animal-print accessories and details. I have a crappy glass and metal coffee table which I will replace but probably not until I do other stuff. I should put a different rug in there too because the rug that’s there now is a beautiful Persian rug, but it doesn’t go. It will be gorgeous in the dining area when I get the table.
  • Kitchen: I dunno. I could really use a cookware makeover. I mean, seriously. All the good stuff was EXMS’s anyway (from his previous marriage—they had top-of-the-line everything and he was the cook, so he got a lot of goods out of that ordeal). I’m positive I would cook more if I had some great cookware. Need to inventory and figure out what I need. That’s a huge project in and of itself. As is…
  • Closets: Oh hell. Don’t even get me started. It would be REALLY lovely to have my very spacious walk-in closet turned into a dressing room. This is very possible now that I have an extra spacious walk-in that used to be EXMS’s. This is something I can do after everything else is done.
  • Everywhere: Plants would be nice, no? But I have a brown thumb. So bad with plants, but I just love them in the loft. There’s so much light… it’s a shame not to be more organic and green! Any suggestions for easy plants that can handle full sunlight?
