Updates! in Open Diary 2001-2018 (Pre-Prosebox)

  • As of yesterday morning, I am officially the very proud owner of my own business!! That’s right! With the help of some of my fashionable friends (including some brilliant ODers), I have registered a business name with [my city] and bought the .com domain. I am thrilled! I already have a meeting lined up next week with a possible client/manufacturer to show them some of my capabilities. Next steps: website/blog, logo, business cards, etc. Lots to do!!
  • I’m meeting Mr. 4-Hours-Away this afternoon. He has meetings this morning in a small city that is 2 hours away, bringing him close enough to me that he wants to visit (finally!). We’ve been back and forth on the phone now for well over a month (could it be 2??), and I haven’t met him yet. Usually I don’t want to wait that long to meet someone because I want to see if the chemistry is there. He’s been promising to visit me for several weeks, and things seem to fall through every time. This time, he’s really coming! I’m sort of excited, but it feels a little anticlimactic. The other thing: he looks very handsome in his photos, but…no close-ups. I can’t see a great, big smile in any pix, and he’s British. Yipes. I smell bad teeth. We shall see.
  • Last night I met my friend Erin out for a drink to help celebrate her brand-spanking new boyfriend’s birthday. I don’t know what came over me, but I was feeling kind of rare-formish. I was on a roll with the jokes, we took tons of pix (to follow on facebook), and I even met a guy who I thought was really handsome and just my type. We totally hit it off, and I even agreed to go to the next bar with the group (though I didn’t want to drink for various reasons—and I didn’t—much!) so that I could hang out more with Erin and find out more about this guy. It was alllll fun and games for the longest time. We talked, laughed and even danced to the great jukebox music. But once we sat down and got to the brass tacks of sharing details of our lives and what we were all about, two things made the record scratch for me:

    1. He’s a Kiwi (from New Zealand), but he has this American-sounding accent…it actually sounds like he’s from Long Island or something. When I asked him about this, he told me that he quickly lost his Kiwi accent when he moved to the US because he thought it stuck out too much. For some reason, that turned me off. It reminded me of a girl I used to work with who’d taken some kind of exchange program somewhere in the UK—for one semester. It had been years and YEARS since she’d been there, and yet when we started working together, she had this weird British accent. It seemed really fake and forced to me and always made me uncomfortable. That’s how I felt about THIS guy, too.

    2. His last name rhymes with “diarrhea”. No, not kinda sounds like… It is pronounced exactly like “diarrhea”, only with a different letter at the beginning. Um, ick. When I asked him about this as well, he told me that the New Zealand pronunciation is much different, with some kind of rolling “r”, etc. and he pronounced it for me several times. I asked him WHY he didn’t just pronounce it the original way, and again, it was to make things easier for an American accent.

    I’m sorry, but he just seemed to strike me as unauthentic (is that even a word?). I was just so turned off by the fact that he’d changed so much of himself to fit into American life. I don’t know why my reaction was so strong, but it was. By the end of the night, he asked me if I wanted to go out, and I basically flat-out told him no. Which was probably not a smart move on my part, as he could probably help me from a business standpoint (he’s a creative director at an advertising firm), but… just ick!

    HOWEVER, we’re now Facefreak friends, so perhaps I can smooth some of that over?

  • Here’s something awesome: Yesterday, I visited a beautiful shopping district in town. It’s an exclusive area, and I wanted to check out what’s going on in upper-end retail stores for Fall. It was actually quite a fantastic trip. I was feeling really excited about my new business and I was gathering ideas. On my way out of one of the stores, I happened to pick up one of those free glossy magazines that certain stores and boutiques carry. It’s chock full of pretty photos and ads and articles and photos of society events. So I flipped through and what did I see? Down at the bottom of one of the society pages, amidst many, many smiling, pretty faces and fancy garb, was good ole’ K. and his ex-girlfriend at one of the art gallery fetes! Lovely. And you know what was sooooo awesome about it? She looks almost exactly like me! Seriously, if there weren’t names attached to the photos, you’d think it was me. Funny thing is, next month it WILL be me because K. and I were photographed at another event! Think he has a type? The funny thing is, his type is so extreme! Imagine if you will, a very handsome, VERY milk-chocolatey Latino. Combine him with a lilly-white skinned, freckled woman with long-ish layered red hair. The contrast is very striking. They actually make an extremely attractive couple. I am dying to see what WE look like together in the next issue!
  • It’s official. I finally had the courage to step on the scale this morning. I have gained exactly 15 lbs. since the breakup with EXMS. I wanted to lose 5 lbs. before the wedding to get back to the weight that I was when I was happiest with my body. You know what that means? TWENTY pounds!! I need to work on losing 20 lbs.!! So today is Day #3 with my brand new diet. I am keeping a food journal and simply keeping up with my 4X/week workout routine. I have increased the weights that I’ve been using in my weight training classes (2X/week), and continue with the cardo (2X + some cardio included in weight training classes). I know that a lot (most) of my problem lies in my eating/drinking issues. Hence the food diary. Day #3 and I can already feel a difference because of the big shift in my eating/drinking. I realize that since I haven’t been working I tend to snack like crazy. No mas. And when I’m not heading into an office at 7am every morning, I tend to let myself drink with abandon. No more of that, either. I’m still going out and I’m still having fun, but I am definitely watching the alcohol intake as well.
