…at my new JOB!
Didn’t know how long it would take in the traffic, so I started out really early. Plus, I knew that my new boss (she needs a name–for now I’m going to call her New Boss until I figure out her personality) was taking her whole group out to lunch for a baby shower of one of her team, so I wanted to stop and pick up a card before my 8:15 specified meeting time. Drive was 20 minutes (hooray!) which gave me time to pick up a card, a latte, AND sit in the parking lot for 15 minutes sending texts and emails.
One other new hire showed up at the same time and we discovered quickly that we’d both come from my OLD company. Her tale was not as tragic as mine (she’d mentioned her HUGE severance….bluh….I didn’t mention my being shit-canned).
Were both taken into a small room in the HR office and somebody came in and told us that we were going to be rescheduled for our orientation since there were only two of us. Will both have to wait two weeks to figure a bunch of shit out. By that time, we’ll probably have it all figured out anyway, right?
New Boss and New Counterpart showed up, surprised that I wasn’t in orientation, but still VERY happy to see me (yippee!) and showed me to where my temporary desk will be. Currently not sitting next to the team for space purposes, but will be moved sometime in April to a larger office with my team.
No computer yet. I have a phone, but don’t know the number.
New Counterpart and I will be working very, VERY closely together. She has a super unusual name, and she looks exactly like Pink, the musician, and she told me that if I can’t pronounce her name I can call her “Pinky”. Seriously. I heard someone actually call her that today, so her nickname’s going to be very easy.
Met all the people who will be sitting around me at the moment. All seem very cool. Vibe is quite different (in a good way) from old company. Thank God.
Attended a T&A meeting (that’s Time and Action, smut-brains) led by Pinky that practically blew me away. My brain went into overdrive.
Lunch with the team at a fantastic Mexican place. Chicken enchiladas with mole sauce. Yum. The lunch was for Jennifer, the pregnant one who is about to pop and doesn’t want to go on maternity leave until she does pop. There was cake afterwards. Delicious. Funny banter. I think I like this team.
Checked personal email from my phone. Two emails and two texts from Captain K. Ugh. Did not and will not answer.
Sweet texts from CC, Cindy, and Maria. Answered all.
Starbucks after lunch and then back to my empty desk with a couple of handbooks. So much to learn and know for this gig.
Another meeting in the afternoon, and as I walked in, someone asked if I knew I had flowers waiting for me at the front desk. New Boss walked in and asked if I knew I had flowers at the front desk. Does everyone know but me? I didn’t know! New Boss suggests that I go down and get them so that everyone in the meeting can see!
Beautiful orchids from CC. Really clever and touching message on card.
Big, kinda scary meeting about a quarterly review that’s going to be on Wednesday 8AM in a different location (about an hour from my place).
Another sit-down with Pinky. This time she started to get into some of the nitty gritty of the job. My head nearly exploded. We talked until 5:30, and I think she saw that my face was white as a sheet. We left it at that.
Knock-knocked at New Boss’s door. She waved me in and told me to sit down. Shot the shit for about 1/2 hour. Last time we saw each other outside of the interview process was at a party at Maria’s. I was with EXMS at the time. She asked about him, and I gave her the Cliff Notes version (noting in my head that I don’t want to get into too much personal detail about myself – ever).
Several Big Wigs walked by, popped their heads in and said hello. Felt special.
Out the door by 6:05.
Commute home = 30 minutes. Perfect.
Just in time for a gooooooood yoga stretching.
All in all, a fantastic first day!
So very happy, challenged, and exhausted. Goodnight.
