One reason I posted ‘The paradox of our time’ as my last entry is because I believe it to be true. Having read the notes left for me in that entry, I can see that other people think so too. So what is wrong with the world today?
There seems to be a lack (in my opinion) of self identity and beliefs amongst the youth of today. They generally like the same music and all of the bands in that type of music all seem to sound the same. This is also true of clothes. Anyone who dares to wear anything different from the rest is instantly labeled a freak. The previous generation (which I just missed out on being a part of) is dubbed Generation X (gen X for short). The label which has been applied to this generation is Generation Why? I think that this is appropriate.
The end of the ’90’s saw something I am not proud of. It was the first time in five decades that there was not some type of cultural revolution. End of the ’50’s, rock n roll. End of the ’60’s, flower power. End of the ’70’s, punk. End of the ’80’s, rave. End of the ’90’s, ? Some people have suggested culture jamming, bit I don’t think that it was widespread enough. There is a general apathy in people nowadays. Some put this down to pre-millenial tension. That is being used to describe too many things nowadays.
Eminem attracts controversy due to his lyrics and behaviour. Lets face it, ladies and gentlemen, if he was around 10 – 20 years ago, no-one would bat an eyelid. It’s just because we live in a politically correct world that he does. Is what he raps about really any different to what the likes of the Sex Pistols and The Stranglers were doing in the late ’70’s? The Brits usually have something controversial happen (Jarvis Cocker upsetting Michael Jackson, MP’s getting water poured over them, Brandon Block trying to take on Keith Richards in a fight). This year? Craig David failing to win a Brit despite 6 nominations. Remember, this is the guy who wrote Rewind (when the croud say bo selecta).
