We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.
We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life; we’ve added years to life, not life to years.
Hate too often. As we grown in our understanding of each other, hate diminishes. The klan is a shadow of it’s former self. The Third Reich was destroyed.
We hate each other. Tolerance of people from different countries is low.
We’ve been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbor.
We’ve conquered outer space, but not inner space.
We have not come close to conquering outer space. As for inner space, we continue to learn more and more about how the mind works, why we act as we do, and how we can help those with mental problems
The only thing that we have learned about the mind recently is that splitting the brain onto it’s two halves is not a good idea. As a psychology student, I know this. And our solution for mental problems appears to be lock them up and medicate them into a stupor.
We’ve done larger things, but not better things.
I would say that the implementation of welfare is a good thing. The widespread use of medicine throughout America. The electification of the entire nation.
The implementation of welfare. Does that include the bitching about those on welfare? And surely it would be better to find people work instead. Medicine throughout America. To those who can afford it.
We’ve cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul.
Poluted the soul in what way? I’m not going to argue this one, just go back up and look at my response to values. It’s the same argument again
Polluted the soul be being more self-centred and concerned about the almighty (insert unit of currancy of choice here).
We’ve split the atom, but not our prejudice.
While prejudice still remains, it is slowly fading away. There is less prejudice present than during the 1950s or the 1920s.
I would argue that there is more prejudice but as it is no longer just about gender or skin colour it is not as noticable.
We write more, but learn less.
We learn more. There is more to be learned every day with new thoughts and ideas flowing into our collective works of knowledge
We learn less. We only read about those subjects and viewpoints which are the same as our own. People only want to see one side of the sale.
We plan more, but accomplish less.
We’ve sent men to the moon, eradicated smallpox, reunited Germany, saved millions of lives with modern medicine and you say we’ve accomplished less?
We still have to eradicate prejudice, reunite man with his fellow man, get rid of nuclear weapons in order not to endanger millions more lives and you think we have accomplished a lot recently?
We’ve learned to rush, but not to wait.
We build more computers to hold more information to produce more copies than ever, but have less
communication.
I have more communication that I ever had before with a computer. I correspond with friends accross the continent, and in a few cases, across the globe. I can reach out and talk with various people everywhere in the world without any difficulty. I can talk with equals, a necessity for comunication
And how many of those friends have you actually talked to? I talked with equals before the internet. It’s called interpersonal communication. Without that, the human soul is finished.
These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion; tall men, and short character; steep profits, and
shallow relationships.
Short character. How could any politicians character be shorter than that of Hitler, the Duvaliers(spelling) of Haiti, Diem of South Vietnam, or King Leopold of Belgium (and his own personal estate of the Congo).
These are the times of world peace, but domestic warfare; more leisure, but less fun; more kinds of
food, but less nutrition.
Less fun? I enjoy my activities much more than when I was younger and had limited resources.
I actually enjoyed childhood activities more. I had limited resourses, true, but umlimited imaginaton.
Less nutrition? The Ancient Greeks were usually about 4’10” for the males. The increase in heigh over the past 2500 years is not due to evolution, it doesn’t work that fast. We are better nurished than we ever were before.
If you take out fast food, deep fried food, microwave meals and the likes you might not actually notice much of a difference.
These are days of two incomes, but more divorce; of fancier houses, but broken homes.
Before no-fault divorce, couples would need to have a reason to break up: physical abuse, infidelity, impotence. They would be forced to send one of them to the hospital in order to obtain the necessary legal seperation. I would think of the couples that did stay together because of stricter divorce law as broken homes
But now it is far too easy for a couple to split because of a minor disagreement. Before the no-blame divorce at least you had to have tried your best to make the marriage work.
These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throw-away morality, one-night stands, overweight
bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer to quiet, to kill.
I find no problem with quick trips, disposable diapers, or anti-depressants. I wonder who does.
There is no such thing as a happy pill. Anyone who thinks there is is dreaming.
It is a time when there is much in the show window and nothing in the stockroom; a time when
technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to
just hit delete.
There’s plenty in the stockroom. Just go down to Powells (11th and Burnside) and if they don’t have the book you’re looking for on display, they’ll probably have it in the back.
The stockroom is metaphorical, not literal.
And these are the days of technology were drivel like this can circulate the globe a million times in the space of time it took for me to refute it.
Earlier on, you were saying that technology was wonderful.
