Let’s all march in London! in OD

On Wednesday I took part in a protest march and rally against student loans and tuition fees.

The adventure started at around 3am when, after getting my personal stereo and my mobile phone stolen (grrrr) I got on a bus outside the students union to go to London. We were the first ones there. After picking up a banner, we had to hang around for an hour and a half before getting ready to go.

We were supposed to start at 11. We actually started at 12. On the way I saw many unique and interesting banners. These included:
“I need to support my crack habit”,
“I need to buy a TV liscence P.S. I can’t spell”,
“Insert slogan here”,
and “Hi mum, I’m broke”

We also sang. Lets just say ‘Uncle’ Tony did not get it easy.

(To the tune of ‘London Bridge is falling down) Tony Blair is a right, is a right, is a right, Tony Blair is a right Tory bastard.
(to the same tune)Tony Blair is a cunt, is a cunt, is a cunt, Tony Blair is a cunt, not a bastard.
(No tune for this one) Tony Blair got it free, Why the fuck shouldn’t we?
And my favourite of the day: (to the tune Hey Baby by DJ Otzi) Hey, hey Tony (YOU TWAT), I want to know, if you’ll pay my fees.

We marched past the Houses of Parliament (on half term, so there were no MP’s there). It is truely a magnificent building. We were accompanied by a 12 piece drum band (really good but incredibly loud).

Finally we got to Trafalgar Square for the rally. (See picture above. I was standing near the lion on the right of the pic.) This was the first time that a rally following a demonstration had been held in Trafalgar Square midweek. Truely, I was part of history.

And I’ll say one thing. No matter how big you think Nelson’s Column is, when you actually see it, it will take your breath away. It is HUGE.

After the speakers (biggest cheer went to Ken Livingstone, most boos went to Owain James (NUS President)), I went to the pub. Got back on the bus at 7:30, left London at 8, got home about 2:45. All in all a good day.

Will
