It’s gonna be another weekend of socializing. Yesterday Aaron and I had lunch (sushi! Mmm..) with Amber, tonight we’re doing a fancy dinner with Aaron’s mom and aunt, and Sunday we’re doing brunch with Genevieve. It’s good for me. I just feel so out of practice at the whole conversation with people aside from immediate family and Aaron thing.
I started reading Water for Elephants the other day and am really enjoying it. I was worried that it was going to be another book that was all hype and wouldn’t be to my taste or was poorly written but popular because it’s involves a love story, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised. I find circus culture fascinating and the author’s writing style paints a really vivid picture. I’ve not yet seen the film, but I’ve been very interested in it since Aaron and I visited Circus World in Baraboo, WI. They have the largest collection of circus wagons in the world and they are so beautiful. Many were used in the film, but I didn’t want to watch it until I’d read the book. Reading this makes me realize I haven’t really encountered many veterinarian characters in fiction. There are some really poor examples in television (main character guy in Grimm’s fiancee lady makes me really frustrated. Plus there are a hand full of others....the vet Meredith Grey dated briefly who was mercilessly bashed by the human doctors in Grey’s Anatomy…the girl Pete from Warehouse 13 dated for a while…that’s all I can think of off the top of my head but all were really disappointing) but I’ve encountered very few in books. It’s fun to read about the various veterinary medicine stuff in Water for Elephants, though. Some seems accurate, but it’s hard to know if it all is given it’s meant to be period appropriate and most is large-animal related, neither of which are things I’m terribly familiar with. It also makes me wish I could go back in time and go to some old-time circus performances since today’s, by comparison, are so tamed down (and much safer and humane for all involved, which is a definite plus!).
Again, if any of you want a Christmas card (or possibly a post-Christmas card since I’m a bit disorganized :P), feel free to leave your address in the comments :)
