For another 4 – 5 years. We have a new(ish) government.
Labour won, to the surprise of, well, no-one actually. But their majority has shrunk. To the surprise of, well, no-one. This was one of the most predictable elections in years.
What did surprise me, watching the coverage, was thesize of the swing, not to the Tories, but to Lib Dem. Charles Kennedy is right when he said the era of three party politics (well, in England anyway) is truely on us.
Sunderland South set a new record as the first constituancy to declare for a fourth successive election. They declared 43 minutes after the close of polls.
Next election will be interesting. Not only will Blair not be leading Labour (anyone who thinks anyone else than Brown will be is an idiot) but Michael Howard will not be in charge of the Tories. As he will be too old (in his opinion). Which means we may see radically different campaigns (hopefully not as negative).
Labour got a real bloody nose in Blaenau Gwent, previously seen as the safest Labour seat in Wales. The incumbent MP wasn’t eligible for selection by the party due to the imposition of a all female selection list on the constituancy. So he ran as an independent and won with a majority of 9,121.
So, that’s us for another 4 – 5 years. Blair will have difficulty with his smaller majority and, well, we’ll see.
