Why I study foreign languages in French

Every month, one of the adult French camp teachers hosts a free online French chat, and I logged into this one. There was one other student along with the teacher. I sort of remember the other student but not completely. I had the impression that she’d really been studying and was speaking much better than she had at adult French camp. Clearly, she and I were earnest students, and I appreciated that.

The teacher corrected me, which I appreicate, when I said, “Il est mouru” instead of “Il est mort.” I thanked her but am still confused. Can anyone help?

Anyway, the teacher was clearly distraught. She lives in St. Paul, Minnesota, and the lives of her students have been greatly affected by ICE. She’s an extremely organized person, the best of the camp directors (and I’ve been to French camp, like, five times), so it was surprising to see her seem upset and vulnerable. Anyway, we moved on to talking about the weather. Then the teacher asked if we’d watched Bad Bunny. I admitted that I hadn’t, and that I hadn’t even watched the Super Bowl. The other student said she’d turned on the other bad alternative Kid Rock program.

The teacher hid her outrage as did I.
