current book
Here are the books I’ve read so far this year. They were all pretty good. I haven’t marked any of them with my “best of 2026 tag” but then again I haven’t created the tag yet:
Bonfire, Krysten Ritter - Kind of like Erin Brockovich meets Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects? It was good and yeah the author is that very striking actress from Jessica Jones and “Don’t trust the B in apartment 23.” Goodness I loved that show more than any other sitcom. I also read her novel “Retreat” just before the end of last year and liked it.
The Writing Retreat, Julia Bartz - good fast paced thriller. Reminded me a bit of my no eating, no reading, no phone retreat with Marina Abramovich. Ha.
Clever Little Thing, Helena Echlin - another thriller with an unreliable narrator whose daughter might be possessed. Maybe “Audrey Rose” meets “The Bad Seed” with a little sprinkle of those Romanian orphans who were never cuddled as a baby and ended up murdering their adoptive families?
Thirst for Salt, Madelaine Lucas - Protagonist falls in love with an old(er) man and wastes a year or two by the sea. Lovely writing. I particularly liked this one, written by an Australian now living in New York City. This book was poetic and I felt it was interesting to read about the younger woman/old(er) man dynamic from the woman’s perspective. Not my thing but seems to happen a lot. Love is love but I blame the patriarchy, ha.
current music
“Dracula,” by Tame Impala. I keep hearing this lyric, “Run from the sun like Dracula” on the radio and it really sums up my life. Why do I hate the sun? Everyone else seems to love it. But I have always strongly disliked being in the sun for more than 45 seconds. I remember my mother really thinking I was weird for this about this around age 7 or 8.
current TV
It has almost certainly jumped the shark but I was surprised/excited to learn that “Industry” got renewed and I watched the first episode of the new season. Because Lehman Brothers analyst class of 2000 FOREVER. In 2008 I would receive an offer to rejoin the firm, but it was very important I did not accept that offer :) I am also excited for the new Ryan Murphy joint, “The Beauty” coming out tomorrow.
current movie
I have no idea. A and I were just saying, now that we don’t go to film festivals, are rarely on long flights and no longer have a cinema in our building, we hardly ever watch movies. On the bright side, I have also not fallen asleep and started snoring in a premiere while sitting next to the people who made the movie in quite some time now.
current secondhand item
I repurposed a number of white ostrich feathers from the decor at the New Year’s Eve event we attended. Some were presented theatrically to fellow attendees who were well dressed and seemed fun. And others I carried home like a bouquet that is now in a vase by my nightstand. They seem to match well with my canopy bed with mosquito netting, but may be attracting dust. Weirdly, the mosquito netting is not only aesthetic, but has also caught mosquitoes.
current mood
I feel like this should refer to something mental but I just need to say that my hands feel very hot while my feet are ice cold and that is all I can focus on. It’s a mood.
current workout
Barry’s Bootcamp, because Sydney 2026 is also 2014 in NYC. We’ve been back doing it again just over a year now, our first class was Christmas Day 2024. But I just saw something that the new CEO might be MAGA - which on one hand blows my mind because he’s literally a very out gay man, but on the other hand, kind of makes sense. Because if the patriarchy hates women so much, why not have a male romantic partner rather than deal with females? I will finish out our classes that we have right now and then either work out at home and/or find something new to keep fit once we move into the new place, which has a small gym and also different gyms nearby. I am also going to try and incorporate sauna a few times a week now since they also have one in the gym.
current food
I have copied this survey from [kerplotchies] and interestingly we both chose cottage cheese. Her recipe is zesty with salt and red pepper flakes, and for me it’s bland pablum either scrambled mixed with eggs or mixed with cinnamon as a dip for apple slices. I like this because it’s soft and easy to eat and make protein. I googled to check the spelling of “pablum” and learned it was created in the 1930’s by physicians to fight malnutrition at “The Hospital for Sick Children” in Toronto but now carries a metaphorical meaning of simplistic and insipid content.
current drink
Iced green tea, made in a big mason jar that I keep in the fridge. I love it.
current outfit
I’m in a soft strappy nightgown right now but I wore an interesting architectural black dress to the office, sleeveless and midi length with a high neck. 4 inch/105mm black chanel calfskin platform heels with slight platform and black patent toe caps.
current smell
Tom Ford “Fucking Fabulous” I also have the lipstick. It’s a nice red colour but wears off a bit fuschia for my taste. The lipstick smells like chocolate.
current crush
Not-quite-domesticated animals. I read today that foxes are domesticating themselves because there are now too many of them for their usual habitats. And that raccoons are evolving to become more cute because their noses are getting shorter, similar to dogs hundreds of years ago. This broke my heart but they are also adorable. I also enjoy most other non-domesticated animals like otters, bats, belugas, possums and subway rats.
current cute
A got me some chanel nail varnish as a present. The colour is called “Cosmic” and it’s an aubergine/eggplant colour pretty much identical to the eggplant/penis euphemism emoji. My nails are short and self-painted.
current worry
THE WORLD.
current excitement
Moving into our new place. Finally.
current stressor (okay I added this one)
Moving into our new place, and the organisation aftermath. We are usually pretty quick to get everything back into place after a move but this one is going to be a doozy I think.
current goal (okay this was also added)
Maintain zero inbox on a weekly if not daily basis
Start to wean myself off things like google search, gmail. I discontinued amazon around this time last year and stopped posting on meta socials but continued to use what’sapp. I may start to post again on socials this year though. I have mixed feelings about it but most of my friends live thousands of miles away so it’s the best way to stay connected.
current gratitude
After all this, we are still here and healthy and employed and housed and fed and even exercised. And A. Always A.
currently missing
New York City. I am such a fucking cliche and I know I do this every decade or so but anywhere else really does feel like I am kidding.
current podcast
I don’t listen to podcasts
current craft
I don’t do crafts. I would very much like to be able to do witchcraft tho.
current jewelry-o
I don’t wear jewelry. I should probably make a new survey with categories that are more relevant to me. Or I should be more normal, IDK. Just kidding. Pretty sure my next entry will be a completely unhinged currents survey that is unrelatable to anyone except for me. Who’s in?
