I don’t know when I’ve been the most surprised in my life. There have been several things that have surprised me, both good and bad. I generally don’t like surprises because I tend to be more of a planner, as I like to know what to expect in certain situations. I like the lines of what is supposed to be and what I’m allowed to do clearly defined. Odd that with that, I love my job so much, because you NEVER know what you’re going to find when you go on a call.

But… the top ones really have to do with work and being a paramedic. I was surprised that I actually finished paramedic school. It was very hard to do while I was double majoring and working full time, but I did it.

Then I was surprised I passed the state exam, because I didn’t think I had any idea what the hell I was doing.

I was surprised when I got my first EMS job.

I was surprised when I got my first full time paramedic position.

I was surprised when I got my National Registry on my first attempt.

I’m constantly surprised by what I realize I know… but not surprised by how much I don’t know, however, I have that drive to learn more, to be better.

I’m surprised I fell in love with being a paramedic. It’s my favorite thing ever… well, almost.
