9/3/25 - Pressure for M.A. in The Beginning

Graduated from university in May. Told my mom that I would maybe apply to get my M.A. in a year or two once I get more experience in my field (the field that I study you mostly start off with seasonal or temporary jobs before getting a full-time gig. Not uncommon for getting right out of school).
Went to an internship out of state in the summer and got back a month ago. Wanted to get a local minimum wage job to save up money for student loans I have to start paying off in December and I want to travel for a bit with my friend in the early months of 2026. Then in the summer I figured I could either see if I could get a job in my field or volunteer someplace near me.
However, within the last month, my mother got this idea into her head that I could start grad school in January and that’s what I should be doing instead.
I don’t think she realizes how much work you have to put in to get your M.A. and that, if your heart isn’t 100% into it (Mine certainly isn’t, I don’t even know what I would want my research topic to be), you’re not going to have a good time.
She just assumes that if you get your M.A. you can get a job that requires an M.A. and thus, more money (this isn’t true at all, jobs in the field that require an M.A. also require years of experience, which I wouldn’t get the opportunity to do if I was getting my M.A.).
I haven’t said to her anything about it yet because “mother always knows best.”
