A guy I met, Carl, once said to me that the music of the early 1970s was the best music ever. He was an Eagles fan and bands of that Laurel Canyon, Yacht rock ilk - The Doobie Brothers, CCR… early Billy Joel was ok. He said it was the best music and the only music he liked to listen to. Some people can be a little inflexible in their tastes and Carl was one of them.

I met Carl in Taiwan a couple of years ago. He was travelling with his Taiwanese girlfriend. He wasn’t having a nice time. It was January and he had spent the previous ten days in the north of the island where it tends to be damp and windy in the wintertime. Carl was expecting grass huts and coconut trees. Also he didn’t like the food in Taiwan. It’s not like the Chinese food we get in Canada, he said.

I’m reading a book that I’ve never read before - Mario Puzo’s The Godfather. The movie I’ve seen many times so I can say that the movie follows the book very well. Very closely. But what has been coming to light as I read the book is that the current president must have read The Godfather during his formative years. The Donald is so much like the Don. He has modelled himself after this book. It’s dangerous to be an honest man.

What I’m saying is that we develop our tastes and personality when we are young. Some of us are open to change. Some of us hone in on our beliefs.
