Good fences make good neighbours in Book Two

We were like cousins. Now we are like neighbours, neighbours that have gone to the city land office to ask about getting a survey so we can build a big fence. That’s pretty much how I would sum up the relationship between Canadians and Americans, as countries, not as individual people.

As individuals, Canadians feel hurt and betrayed. Americans abruptly jilted us and then started badmouthing us on social media, telling lies about us, doxing us and posting nudes. What did we do to deserve this? We were caught with our pants around our ankles, for sure. It all happened so fast. Now we are angry and confused.

Canada to America: When I think about you, I feel sorry for you.
America to Canada: I don’t think about you at all.

Perspective is everything. And I suspect that my American neighbours probably have different feelings for Canada than they did a year ago. What they are I do not know. I recently heard that travel to Canada from Americans is down 11% this year. The reason given is that Americans are not sure how they will be treated in Canada.
Truthfully, I’m not so sure either.
