Joe is in Norway and Allen is in Taiwan. I get texts, and emails with photos from Joe and instagram messages and YouTube notes from Allen. Allen has made 3 YouTube videos already, though he just landed in Taiwan on Monday morning.
Yesterday in the New York Times, I read that there were protests in Europe aimed at tourists for over-tourism. Water pistols. Hmm. Careful what you wish for.*
I backpacked through Europe and Asia 35 years ago. Hitchhiking. Sleeping rough. On the cheap. I saw Europe. I teamed up with a guy in Italy, picked up couple of girls who had teamed up somewhere in Europe too. The four of us picked up another couple in Greece and then the six of us took over a small coastal village on Crete for a couple of weeks. It was the orangeist spot on the USA Today weather map.
In Asia I mostly travelled alone, hitchhiking up the east coast of Malaysia. I’m glad I traveled then like I did. I enjoy the photos I get from Joe but Northern Europe does not interest me. (Southern Europe does not interest me either.) It is kind of fun to see Taiwan through Allen’s eyes. But Allen is a newbie so he’s in an ‘oh wow’ phase of Taiwan and for me his insights are more of a reminder than a revelation.
*As an aside, it seems like protesting is the way people like to spend their weekends now.
