A Not So Lazy Sunday in Ponderings of the Universe

One day weekends are seriously not long enough. Especially since I don’t really feel like I got a day off in the first place because projects. Bleh. Ah, well.

Today was pretty pleasant. Weekends are slower, especially this time of year and so only one intern doctor instead of two or three is on. I worked with Dr. I, who is from Spain, and got to do a lot because doing on the clinical doctory stuff was up to her and me. I did an entire chelation protocol for a bald eagle with lead toxicity and the physical exam from start to finish. I think I did pretty well. Or, at least, I didn’t get my face torn off by the eagle and didn’t kill it, so that counts as good in my book :P Plus I had my thumb in its mouth for a while which was terrifying. I was supposed to gavage feed it and shove some pills in but I didn’t feel comfortable doing that. I’d like to keep all my fingers and I’m just not that great at bird head restraint yet. Thankfully, Dr. I was able to hold the eagle’s mouth open so I could feed it and sneak the pills in there. Phew! Oh! And I felt some subcutaneous emphysema in another patient, which was awesome! Well, for me to actually feel for the first time, probably not so much for the bird.

Then, for the rest of the day, instead of working on my projects like I thought I would have the opportunity to, I helped Dr. I with data collection for one of her projects. ::sigh:: I actually enjoyed it. Data entry and filing is kind of relaxing. But, it was frustrating nonetheless because of all the other stuff I still have to work on. Aside from that, I thought it might be really awkward being one-on-one with her since I’m kind of awkward and we’d be eating lunch together and I’d have to try to hold up a conversation. It actually went quite well, though. She’s really nice and thinks that the number of projects our supervisor assigns us (and the intern vets!) is kind of crazy. She’s also homesick and misses her boyfriend, who moved to the US with her, but got a job in Rhode Island so their relationship is still long-distance, just not as long of a distance as it would be had he stayed in Spain. It was really nice to have a good conversation with her because I feel like I’ve been having major conversation fail with everyone on this rotation. I think the whole being in a largish crowd thing is what the issue is for the most part.

Must go work some more. I’m not sure which weekend day I’m taking next weekend, so I might be working 7 days in a row! Whee!!! I wonder how many more projects I don’t have time to do I’ll be assigned.
