money for nothing in Book Two

My friend Allen must have money problems. Aspirational money problems. He has enough money. I’ve seen all the stuff in his garage. He spends too much.

So a few months ago, Allen started a Youtube channel. He got off to a fast start. I don’t know why. His first video attracted thousands of views. He was happy. He was on the road to fame and riches. I just need 4000 watch hours and 1000 subscribers, he said.

His second and third videos did not do so well. But on the fourth week, his video again got thousands of views. His subscriber count was excellent and his watch time was slowly going up. Soon he would be monetized. Soon he would be making that sweet Youtube money.

But then the fifth and sixth videos were duds. And the seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth. Allen’s interest and confidence started to wane. He missed week eleven and then missed a few more here and there. His consistency of publishing every Friday was gone.

And soon Allen stopped publishing altogether.

I talked to him on a video call yesterday. He was out filming. His new scheme is to do a couple of videos using the cameras that are a generation or two old. He thinks the camera companies will reward him with new cameras.

It could work. I doubt it. I’m not going to watch a blatant shill for a camera company.

Besides, he’s making videos for all the wrong reasons.
