Sometimes in life, you make a little decision that changes your trajectory a little bit and sometime you make bigger decisions that change everything. 25 years ago today, I arrived back in Canada with my family. I had been living in Taiwan more or less since January 1989. Before that I was a backpacker and a casual labourer in Australia, Israel and Europe. A tree planter, a factory worker, going back and a university student.
So here I was. The year 2000. Back in Canada. An adult with two little kids, no money, no relevant job experience. 37 years old. A fish out of water.
It was tough. But for the kids and for my own future equity, it was a good decision, looking back.
A couple of months ago I bumped into a group of 40-year old Canadians drinking beer in Kaohsiung’s harbour. They had all been in Taiwan for more than a decade, almost two. Peter Pan Syndrome, I thought. These are still boys. They never grew up. They were still living like they were in their 20s. I’m not judging (much.) That would have been me, me at 62.
