My first office job ruined me for all office jobs that followed.
There is more pain caused by unmet expectations than happiness caused by exceeded expectations.
Early successes ruin you for long term growth. If something comes too easy it is not appreciated. When something comes too easily, you come to expect other things to come easily too. When they don’t, you are left with frustration and disappointment
There is an expression about the three generations of wealth, sometimes called ‘shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves’. Essentially the first generation makes the money. The second generation maintains and enjoys the money and the third generation squanders the money.
Yesterday I was thinking about ‘The Dip’ by Seth Godin. It was a little book I read about 20 years ago. It goes like this:
You start a project.
It’s exciting
You make progress.
But then… things get hard.
Progress slows.
The novelty fades.
You start doubting everything.
This is the critical stretch where most people quit
Don’t quit
Here’s a related idea: “He was born on third base and thought he hit a triple.”
