I had a dream. I was still working at the Guelph Mercury. I wasn’t part of the sales team. I was a junior reporter, so junior that I also helped with production. We had morning meetings in a damp and grimy part of the building near the press. There was always a high likelihood of getting newspaper ink on your hands and face.
I sat near the back of the makeshift meeting room.
I was learning the newspaper business from the ground up, in the dream.
That’s ok with me. I like to learn things from the ground up. I don’t like to jump the queue. I prefer to know the nuts and bolts of things.
So today is Monday, it has been a week since I left Taiwan. I am not back to normal. I never will be. Too much has happened. Too much change. It is like that old bit about ‘no man can cross the same river twice’.
I’m going to shave today. I have a dentist appointment at noon. It is time to rejoin the world.
I am over my jet lag and whatever bug I picked up in the airplanes and airports.
I have a live webcam of the Tamsui River on my second monitor. I have a thermos of coffee on my desk and morning classical music on the speakers. In about an hour I will go out for a walkie talkie. Until then, I have this.
