As of right now, my bookmarks list is empty. I read them all! Whee!!
Wits last night was AMAZING! I don’t remember the last time I laughed that much. Tickets actually sold out shortly before the show started, so it was a full house. I had gotten general admission seats, which are in the 2 balconies and the Fitzgerald is such a small venue that we could see everything on stage quite well. Before the show started they had a Twitter wall thingy and people’s tweets with #wits were being posted up there. It was really fantastically interactive. There were tons of librarians in the audience, likely because of Neil Gaiman, so there were lots of librarian joke tweets. It added a really great element to the show.
Neil Gaiman…that man never fails to charm. He was great at the improv bits of the show, which kind of surprised me, though I don’t know why. Oh, and he has such a lovely voice. And did some really hilarious ones in the sketches. And he seemed to have a werewolf thing going over the course of the evening, at one point saying it would be interesting if a werewolf bit the Fitzgerald Theatre and it turned into a werewolf building with all of us inside it. I like the idea of a lycanthropic building, though I’m not quite sure what it would entail. The musical guest, My Brightest Diamond, was a pleasant surprise. I had never heard of her but was pretty impressed. She’s had operatic training so her vocal control was amazing. Plus she was really quirky and a bit avant garde-y, but in a good way. And they did a Murder Cat sketch! It made my night! And an audience singalong to Peggy Lee’s “Fever,” during which Neil actually sang a little bit :P
I’m really curious how the podcast/radio show will pan out. We were there for about two and a half hours (and it flew by!) but the material will have to be cut down to an hour long show. I cannot recommend that you give it a listen highly enough! You can find podcasts here: https://itunes.apple.com/podcast/wits-apm/id568160601
I think production takes a week or two, so you’ll have to wait a bit to hear the show I went to, but until that time give some other episodes a listen! I particularly recommend the Kumail Nanjiani/Valerie June 2 parter. Or the one with Loudon Wainwright as a guest as he’s fantastically odd. You really can’t go wrong with any of them, though :)
Aaron and I had such a good time that I got tickets for this Friday’s show, which features OK Go as a musical guest (squee!) and Hari Kondabolu as the comedian. And I’m seriously pondering tickets for the last show of the season, with Keegan-Michael Key, of Key and Peele fame, and Bhi Bhiman, who I am not familiar with. Things that make me laugh are healthy, right?
After the show got out, we headed to Amber’s birthday party. Oh man, there were just too many people there for me to handle. Grand total of maybe 11 including Aaron and me and I didn’t know 7 of them. Eek! We were playing Cards Against Humanity so that made it a little better but I was so ready to leave after about half an hour, but was stayed maybe 2-2.5 hrs. I just do not do well in crowds that big, especially when I do not know the majority of the people. And some of the people there were shockingly stupid. I don’t say this to be mean, but as an observation. The most glaring example I can think of off the top of my head was this one girl who was in theory a history major and she didn’t know what the 3/5ths Compromise was. And she wasn’t drunk! It was an interesting contrast to our nerdy, intelligent-humor, NPR event earlier in the evening. Even though it made me anxious, it wasn’t that bad. Everyone there seemed nice enough, but I have a hard time following social interactions in groups that big and then my brain shuts off. And I didn’t have a panic attack, so that’s an improvement over how I used to be in my younger years. I was definitely glad to leave, though, and go home to my cozy bed full of too many dogs.
I start my Raptor Center rotation tomorrow and I have received no information about it. A student who already completed it told me to just show up at 8am, someone will let me in, and then I’ll eventually get access to the course website sometime during the course of the day. I’m going with it and trying not to freak out. I hate being unprepared, especially for academic things. Ah, well. At least I know my way around since I used to volunteer there before vet school. Can’t say I remember much about bird medicine, though. Whoops! They’ve got a funky respiratory system and they don’t pee in the traditional sense of the word, and…yeah, that’s about all I’ve got. I’ve heard it’s really fun though and I’m just going to go ahead and assume it will be pleasant and laid back.
Need to shower and eat and go to bed. I’m pretty sleepy, probably recovering from going to bed at 3am (! I’d been trying to have a 10:30ish bedtime during the week since I have to get up at 6:15 for rotations, so 3am was waaaay past my bedtime) last night, and feel asleep earlier when Aaron and I were watching NCIS. Hopefully I can get a good night’s sleep tonight!
