I’m sure every parent out there has a nightmare situation which they become overly cautious about because the idea of it happening makes them go blind in panic. That happened to me today.
I’ve always had a fear of locking Dante in the car, now before I begin let’s rewind to Thanksgiving dinner… Nicolette turns her car on and realizes that yet again (it’s happened a select few times before) that the dash isn’t lighting up. I casually mention to my dad that my car is having some electrical issues, he says we’ll look into it and the matter is forgotten. I make minor notes in the back of my mind that my key phob isn’t unlocking the doors with the ease it once did, that sometimes they don’t lock, sometimes they don’t unlock.
Fast forward to this morning, I get Dante in his carseat for daycare, we go through the drill. I have him sit in his seat, I then put my purse on the passenger seat and drop my keys on the front seat (I’ve put them down before and accidently kneeled on them engaging the locks) in my mind the car is already totally unlocked so I get Dante settled and strapped in. I shut his and hear a beep… I freeze. I think to myself “how can that be?” I wonder how my car engaged itself to lock. I casually try my door… it’s locked. I try Dante’s, it is also locked. I smile at him and tell him I’m going to quickly go back to the front door, he smiles and says okay. I pray that for some reason this morning I didn’t lock the front door since I have a spare car key in the house. I locked the front door.
I remember we used to have a key under the heavy block in front of our house, it’s not there… in foggy memory I believe we gave it to my sister in law. I am without a phone, without any keys, and my child is locked in the car (which I walk back and he thinks this is rather hilarious as I explain mommy made a booboo.)
As luck would have it my neighbor is heading to work, I ask if I can use his cell to call Anthony’s and get my dad on the line. All I need is a house key. My father doesn’t have one but my mother does so he leaves work, goes to the daycare, grabs the key and brings it over. I am lucky that today was cooler and that Dante is a pretty chill kid, we made faces at each other through the glass, counted things, counted the spikes on his dinosaur along with the teeth and anything else that he could reach. Unfortunately his little fingers weren’t strong enough to unclasp his carseat so he was literally stuck until help arrived. My dad got here in record time which makes me believe he broke the speed limit the entire way here, yet again that man is my superhero. I didn’t call James because it’s a total flip of the coin if he’ll be in range or if he’ll even hear his phone in his machine, with that said my dad is a lot closer to come to my rescue.
My car needs to go in and be serviced, until then my keys won’t leave my side, my spare car keys are at ready in the house, and I have two extra keys hidden if something does happen again. So that was the start of my day.
