Pueblo, CO, A Sunday night. I’m first out, meaning I’m the next to be called north. Options, the 151, a coal empty, and the perennial favorite the 594. Yep in old dork fashion ( I’m late 20’s), I am watching a PBS show. I’m rested, feed, watered, and burped, antsy ready to get out of town. The phone rings. “Terry..151. 1159 pm!” Short, simple, I am there. I pack up, get ready to check out of the room. Sign the motel book, hand in the key. 7/11 for coffee, and a Twinkie, etc…why am I still alive?
We are at the Pueblo Yard Office. We’ll get our train orders, register our watches, and wait for the arrival of 151. The South Lead job, is banging off the class tracks. They are making up the 594. There is that coal empty, right behind, the 151, so that’s called 10 minutes behind our call.
The yard office speaker bellows. “ Crew 151!, at the depot change out front”. They are 5 minutes out. We head out to the Crew Change Point, off the Main line, in front of the yard office. We cross several tracks and leads, to the main.
151 arrives, and comes to a stop. Luke Smith, C&S engineer, comes out. No teeth, LOL, Gobdambed,Terry!, you an me in the same chandged, tree timbs in a row! All on line, work’ in! Thanks Luke, safe trip home. You too Son.
I call the the rear end, here’s the release. 151 brake’s releasing, rolling!, Rolling. Still 10 mph, through the depot. 151, 4th Street. 4th Street. They are 10 cars from changing out the rear end. The rear-end is on and gives the Highball. Blowing for 29th Street, 55 mph and climbing
Denver 31st St Yard 5-6 hours away
