Tumescence is a word not often used today. It is the quality or state of being tumescent or swollen. I have only encountered the word in reference to the male sexual organ, though it is evident that it also applies to the female sexual organ. Both the penis and the clitoris can become engorged with blood when the cell walls of certain blood vessels relax so as to allow the normal blood pressure to create the engorgement.
Normally, that relaxation of the otherwise constricted blood vessel is controlled by hormones. As the amount of hormone decreases, as a function of age, certain supplements to the diet may be employed. The physicochemical effects of natural products have been studied with the result of the introduction in to the marketplace of prescription drugs for the relief of “erectile disfunction”.
Among the herbal components in common use are Epimedium sagittatum, otherwise known as Horny Goat Weed. A product has been available from Rite-Aid that offered this in pill form with the addition of maca root.
