Almost had a freak-out experience at the gas station this morning… they had Atkins bars on clearance when we stopped for gas a few days ago so I went back for more. Only to find my debit card mysteriously declined… what??? Went and got John to come in and try to figure out what was going on, but while we were waiting our turn in the very long line, they bounced three other debit/credit cards in a row. You know the saying - once is accident, twice is coincidence, three times is enemy action. Nothing wrong with my card after all - their terminal is busted! Hopefully at some point they’ll realise they have to fix it or they’ll lose a lot of trade… used the card at Publix later in the day (since I couldn’t get John his coke zero at the gas station) and held my breath until it processed successfully… I would have been MORE than pissed off if my card was compromised for the third time in less than 12 months! The first time, it was when Target screwed up so it wasn’t anything to do with me - the bank automatically reissued thousands of cards just in case they were affected… the second time was only three months later and somebody DID get my card number somehow, but we caught it when they’d only spent twenty bucks. I hope it’s a long time before it happens again because it’s a royal pain in the rump not to have a debit card for a week while they process and send out a new one… (oh, and I priced the bars by the box to see if they were really a saving - $6.30 in Publix, nearly $10 in Walgreens! I wonder how much they are at Walmart?)
Anyway, on with the day. I went to work with John today… he didn’t have many calls and he said he’d take me to Trader Joes when he was was done. I had a chance to stop in at the Wellington store earlier in the week just to see what they had, and I was very impressed, but I didn’t have any money to spend until payday (today). Turns out the Palm Beach Gardens store opened this week, and it’s only half as far from the house. Hooray! Thirty minutes drive and we’re there… yes, it’s a fairly long way, but their prices are worth it. I expect we’ll be going down once a month or so. The mini icecream sandwiches half melted on the way home even though I put the frozen stuff into an insulated bag… we obviously need to take the hard-sided cooler if I want to buy icecream. :)
Came home and finished the laundry I started this morning, and the washing machine seems to be playing up. When it was spinning out, it kept going ‘kerthunk’ and stopping dead until I lifted the lid and prodded it to start again. I sure hope there’s nothing REALLY wrong with it… I doubt that the landlord will be willing to replace/fix it, and we can’t afford our own! (btw, I told John that if we’re going to stay here a few years we need to get a clothes line for the backyard to save money… the electric bill has been shocking over the summer!)
