I think it’s both funny and annoying that I am not embarrassed about the fact that I wear diapers, but other people always seem to be.

I am visiting my moms right now. I came down this weekend with my son. The purpose of the trip was to let my moms spend a little time with their grandson and for me to help with some of the last-minute wedding plans. The wedding is less than six weeks away, which is hard to believe.

So whenever I travel, I don’t bring more than a few diapers because they take up an enormous amount of space. The brand I like can sometimes be hard to find, but I know I can get something usable at virtually any pharmacy, so I always just plan to buy some when I get wherever I am going.

Cheryl picks us up at the airport and immediately asks if I need anything or if we should head straight back to their house. I think about it for a second and mention that I need to stop somewhere for diapers. She looks at my son and comments about him needing a change, and I respond that I’m actually talking about diapers for me.

There is a moment of awkward silence. Then she comments that she forgot that I was still wearing “guards.” That was the word she used. I told her that I am still wearing them and that I probably will be forever. And I told her it’s OK to call them diapers. That’s what I call them. That’s what they are.

She shrugged and made a comment that it’s good that I’m not embarrassed.

Ugh. I’m not even remotely embarrassed about it at this point. Wearing diapers is the reality of my life. You know what’s much more embarrassing? Wetting my pants.
